Kenny Mayne tweets from Federal Way-TJ football game

November 1st, 2011 at 12:47 pm by caseyolson

This is the photo tweeted by Kenny Mayne during the Federal Way-Thomas Jefferson football game Oct. 28 at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The Oct. 28 football game between Federal Way and Thomas Jefferson had a little more star power than normal. Thomas Jefferson grad and ESPN employee Kenny Mayne was in attendance to watch his Raiders get thrashed by Federal Way, 34-8. Mayne played quarterback for TJ back in the 1980s before heading to Wenatchee Valley CC and UNLV.

Mayne tweeted during the game, which happened to take place during Game 7 of the World Series: “WS update please..rivalry week won out here..TJ vs FW..”

Mayne also included a photo from Federal Way Memorial Stadium (above).

WIAA Announces Broad Television/Webcast Deal

October 21st, 2011 at 12:32 pm by caseyolson

RENTON, Wash. - The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), When We Were Young Productions (WWWYP), and PlayON! Sports announces the launch of the WIAA Network, a new cross-platform endeavor that will deliver television and web coverage of WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships.

WWWYP/PlayON! Sports will produce and distribute content for the WIAA Network, which when fully implemented, will feature over 200 state tournament and championship events each year.  Beginning this fall, the WIAA Network will bring highlight coverage of the Boys and Girls Cross Country Championships along with live coverage of 3A/4A Girls’ Soccer, Girls Swimming and Diving, and Semifinal and Championship Football.  All of these events will be available for viewing, live and archival, free of charge on the WIAANetwork.com broadband portal.

“This is a very exciting time for the Association and its member schools,” WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said.  “We recognize the necessity to offer live video webcasts to gain more exposure for our events, the member schools and the student-athletes. This agreement keeps the Association at the edge of the technology movement.”

The WIAANetwork.com online portal is schedule to launch in late October and future announcements on television coverage are forthcoming.  In addition to airing live events, the portal will also be host to numerous “classic” state championship events and highlight packages from previous years.  There will be no subscription fee to view any content on the portal.

“We are very excited to enter into this new partnership with the WIAA. Our goal is to deliver broader levels of coverage and exposure to all WIAA activities within the framework, mission, and values of the Association and its members,” When We Were Young President Tim Eichorst said.

UW’s Tony Wroten Undergoes Arthroscopic Surgery On His Right Knee

October 21st, 2011 at 9:49 am by caseyolson

Here is a press release received from the University of Washington:

SEATTLE
 - Washington freshman guard Tony Wroten underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this Thursday and is expected to return in time for the regular season.

Wroten (Seattle, Wash.) is Washington’s highly touted freshman out of Garfield high school. He is one of seven freshmen to join Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar’s squad this season.

“Tony could have probably gone the whole season with a little discomfort at times and played through this,” said Romar. “But he and his family, plus our staff, thought it would be better to take care of this now so he would be fine for the rest of the year.

“It has been nagging him a little bit, but he’ll be ready to go in no time soon.”

Wroten said on Wednesday that he expects the surgery to be a minor procedure and asserted that he will not miss any regular season games this year and that his goal is to be able to play in the exhibition contest against Seattle Pacific on Nov. 4.

Coach Romar likened Wroten’s surgery to a similar procedure that Husky football player Chris Polk went through before the start of the season.

“He sat out a few days, just to make sure he was okay and didn’t miss any games,” Romar said of the Huskies’ running back that ranks second in the Pac-12 with 121 rushing yards per game.

“Now we see what Chris Polk is doing. Tony should be the same.”

High school officials file lawsuit over pink whistles

June 3rd, 2011 at 12:19 pm by caseyolson

According to the Pacific Northwest Football Officials Association’s Website, the group has filed a lawsuit against the Washington Officials Association and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association over a group of 143 football officials using pink whistles last fall as a benefit for breast cancer awareness.

The officials were recently punished by the WOA. Here is the Mirror’s story from last week regarding the punishment.

Details of the lawsuit have been posted on the PNFOA’s Website. Here is the complete press release issued by Jeff Mattson, the association’s president:

Today, the Pacific Northwest Football Officials Association (PNFOA) filed a lawsuit against the Washington Officials Association (WOA) and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
On May 2, 2011, the WOA disciplined the PNFOA for wearing pink whistles with their uniforms during October 2010 as part of a fundraiser and awareness event for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization that advocates for breast cancer treatment and research.
The WOA changed the rules in the middle of the game. None of the WOA rules in place at the time of the “pink whistles” event regulated whistle color or what charities the PNFOA could support. Nothing in the WOA Constitution or Bylaws said the WOA could control members’ community events. And nothing in the WOA Constitution or Bylaws gave WOA Commissioner Todd Stordahl the power to create new rules at all. But three weeks after the PNFOA officials had started wearing pink whistles, and three days before the final “Give Back” weekend when PNFOA officials would donate their pay to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Mr. Stordahl created a new rule that pink whistles violated the officials’ uniform code.
The May 2, 2011 discipline by the WOA included probation for the PNFOA for an alleged “uniform code” violation, stripping the PNFOA of most playoff officiating spots for not obeying Mr. Stordahl’s last-minute “rule,” and an additional year of probation for PNFOA because the PNFOA refused to give a one-year suspension to every member who had talked to the press or commented on a blog during the October, 2010 “pink whistles” event.
The WIAA organizes interscholastic athletic competitions for over 800 middle and high schools in Washington state—the vast majority of all public and private schools. The WOA has an exclusive agreement with the WIAA. To officiate at WIAA games, officials must be members of the WOA. The two organizations have a monopoly on school sports officiating in Washington State. Thus, the PNFOA officials are faced with a difficult decision: they can submit to the irrational and arbitrary decisions of the WOA; they can stop officiating (thereby harming the schools and students that they serve); or they can attempt to change the situation. This suit is the PNFOA’s attempt to change the situation.
The suit seeks: (1) to enjoin and prohibit infringements on PNFOA officials’ First Amendment rights of free speech and free association; (2) to prohibit the WOA and WIAA from violating their own rules, Constitution, and Bylaws; and (3) to allow freedom to contract among all officials statewide and to prohibit the unlawful monopoly arrangements between the WOA and the WIAA, thereby giving officials and schools a choice.
The men and women of the PNFOA officiate secondary-school sports out of a desire to give back—to make sure that students today have the same opportunities they had growing up. Giving back to the community is equally important. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure event was not the first time PNFOA officials donated their paychecks. Every year the PFNOA gives at least one $500 sportsmanship scholarship to a high school athlete. In 2009, the organization donated $3800 to the family of slain police officer Timothy Brenton.

Isaiah Thomas To Enter His Name Into NBA Draft

March 31st, 2011 at 12:32 pm by caseyolson

SEATTLE – Washington junior guard Isaiah Thomas has decided to enter his name into the upcoming NBA Draft. The two-time first team All-Pac-10 member issued the following statement:
“Although it was a tough decision, I have decided to forego my senior season and enter my name into this year’s NBA draft.  At this time I will not hire an agent.  Over the past 3 years I’ve enjoyed every single minute of my Washington Husky career.  I am very thankful to have played for a great coach like Coach Romar and our entire coaching staff. I have just over two quarter left to earn my degree, and I fully plan on finishing school. Also, I would like to take the time to thank all of my teammates and Husky fans for their support and the unforgettable memories.  Go Dawgs!”
Coach Lorenzo Romar, who is in Houston for the NCAA Final Four, issued the following statement:
“Isaiah Thomas has had an unbelievable impact on our program during his time with us. We will definitely miss him, but we are behind him in his quest to fulfill a lifelong dream to play in the NBA.”
Thomas (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS/South Kent Prep [Conn.]), an honorable mention Associated Press All-American after averaging 16.8 points and 6.1 assists per game for the Huskies during their 2010-11 campaign, led the Pac-10 in assists, ranked fourth in scoring, 8th in steals (1.3 spg) and 8th in three-point makes per game (1.7). His 213 assists are the second most in UW single-season history.
Thomas helped the Huskies to their second-consecutive Pac-10 tournament championship and a 24-11 overall record. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the conference tournament for a second time, joining Arizona’s Sean Elliott as the only two-time winner.
Thomas also led Washington with 15.5 points and 7.5 assists in the Huskies two NCAA tournament games.
Thomas ended his junior season ranked among the Huskies all-time leader in points (1,721/6th), assists (415/3rd), 3-point makes (164/3rd) and steals (122/8th).
