Green River CC offering football
September 23rd, 2009 at 4:00 pm by caseyolsonGreen River Community College in Auburn is among four two-year schools in Washington who are competing in the Northwest Community College Football League. The league is the brainchild of Algona-resident and NCCFL President Kory Hill, who has spent the past four years laboring to reinstate junior college football in Washington State. The last community or junior college in the state to offer football was Walla Walla Community College, whose program ended in 1996.
Here is an article Shawn Skager, the sports editor at the Auburn Reporter, wrote about the newly-formed league:

Ex-Beamer running back serving 48 months in prison
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:49 pm by caseyolsonI was doing a little research about Federal Way school district graduates playing football in college and came across this unfortunate news about former Todd Beamer High School star running back Lamardray Fuller. The All-SPSL running back who received a scholarship to play at Central Washington University plead guilty to first-degree robbery and residential burglary with criminal intent in February and is currently serving 48 monts in prison.
Here’s a couple links to the Ellensburg Daily Record regarding the incident:

During his senior season at Beamer, Fuller finished fourth in the SPSL in rushing yards with 1,229 and 11 touchdowns. His best game came in Beamer’s opener against Jefferson when he rushed for a school-record 307 yards.
Lucky Dawg
September 22nd, 2009 at 4:13 pm by caseyolsonFederal Way played a huge part in the University of Washington’s upset victory over the third-ranked USC Trojans Saturday at Husky Stadium in Seattle. Not only did true freshman defensive end Andru Pulu, a 2009 Federal Way High School grad, actually play during the game, but Brandon Jackson proved to be the Huskies’ lucky charm.
Jackson was chosen as the UW’s “Lucky Dawg” before the USC game. The “Lucky Dawg” is the child that accompanies the Husky captains to midfield before the game for the coin toss. Jackson hails from Federal Way, according to www.gohuskies.com
More on Pulu to come…
Funny soccer video
September 22nd, 2009 at 3:11 pm by caseyolsonHere is a funny video I came across and I was entertained by it. Hopefully you are too. Notice that his “kick” happens after the referee blew his whistle, so does the goal count? This is from a recent match in Russia.

Beamer blowout
September 22nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm by caseyolsonThe Todd Beamer High School girls soccer team, which has won the last three SPSL South Division championships, got a lot of work defending kickoffs during last Thursday’s 18-0 blowout of the Bethel Braves at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. Now I’m not the biggest soccer fan in the world and I don’t wear a scarf to soccer games in 90-degree heat like Seattle Sounders’ fans, but I always remember final scores on the soccer field being 1-0 or if things get crazy, 2-0.
But 18-0? That would be like a football team winning 200-0. During the win over Bethel, the Titans had 13 different players score at least one goal and Jasmine Brillante was the only player with a hat trick. When I saw the score, I immediately emailed first-year coach Joel Lindberg to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.
“The score is correct,” Lindberg emailed back. “It was definitely tough to coach a game like that. The final score is unfortunate.”
It truly is unfortunate and also brings up the old topic of when is enough, enough?
I wasn’t at the game, so I have no idea how everything played out and how truly overmatched the Bethel team was. I do know that there were several goals scored by non-starters and Arizona State University-bound, All-State forward Holland Crook had “only” two goals during the game. I also see that Curtis put up double digits against Bethel earlier this season with a 12-0 win.
After losing to highly-regarded Emerald Ridge on Sept. 10, 3-1, the Titans have outscored their last two opponents, 27-0. Beamer beat Spanaway Lake, another school from the Bethel School District, 9-0 on Sept. 15.
Welcome to the Sidelines
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:34 am by caseyolsonI’m new to the Blogosphere, so go easy on me until I get up to speed on these things. My goal is to give you some information that you can’t get anywhere else about prep sports in Federal Way. Stuff that isn’t necessarily written about in the newspaper. I also will occasionally dive into more regional sports issues when I feel the need — Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders, etc. But my main goal with this Blog, is to make you smile. I will post stuff that I think is funny. Videos, Web sites, etc. I can’t wait to get this thing up and running and getting plenty of input from you.
