Touchdown ‘celebration’ costs his team a state title in Mass.

Here is a heart-breaking story out of Massachusetts that was found on Yahoo.com:

When he raised his fist on his way to the end zone, Boston (Mass.) Cathedral High quarterback Matt Owens that he was celebrating the score that would hand his school a surprising Super Bowl title. Instead, he was doing the one thing that could keep them from it: Earning a penalty on a play where there was nothing but green turf between himself and the end zone.

As reported by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald among other sources, Owens was handed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for raising his fist during his run to the end zone in the fourth quarter, a call which negated the touchdown and moved the ball back out to the spot of the foul at the Blue Hills (Mass.) High 24-yard-line.

Federal Way grad Jodie Kaczor Berry named top assistant hoop coach

December 6th, 2011 at 11:12 am by caseyolson
  • Comments

Federal Way High School graduate Jodie Kaczor Berry is in her seventh year as a member of the Gonzaga women’s basketball coaching staff and fifth year as an assistant coach. She served as the coordinator of women’s basketball operations for the Bulldogs for two seasons prior to being promoted to an assistant coach role in the summer of 2005. Kaczor Berry was promoted to Gonzaga’s top assistant last summer after Jennifer Mountain left to become the head coach at Santa Clara University.

Kaczor Berry brings a solid basketball background to GU after earning four varsity letters at Western Washington University. She finished her career as WWU’s career leader in three-pointers (210) and free-throw percentage (81.9) and earned All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors in 2001 and 2002. Western Washington posted a 95-24 record during Kaczor Berry’s four-year career and four trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament with a final four appearance in 2000. Kaczor Berry led Federal Way to the 1996 state girls basketball championship.

Here is a story by Jason Belzer, currently posted on collegeinsider.com that names the 25 best assistant coaches at women’s mid-major basketball programs across the nation.
Federal Way’s Kaczor Berry is ranked fourth overall by Belzer:

Over the past few seasons, I compiled lists of the top assistant coaches in men’s college basketball, most of which have now gone on to lead their own programs as head coaches. On the heels of the success of these lists, I have decided to provide a similar ranking for women’s college basketball “Mid-Major” assistant coaches.
Ranking the quality of a team is never easy. Ranking the quality of a coach is even harder. Ranking an assistant coach is well… almost down right impossible. There are so many factors that go into determining what exactly makes a good assistant coach; work ethic, servants mentality, reliability, attention to detail, recruiting skills, overall basketball knowledge, the list goes on and on. What is most imperative to remember is that even though assistant coaches are integral parts of each program, they are not irreplaceable. A good assistant supports his head coach, and not the other way around.
In compiling this list, several factors were weighed, one of the more significant of which was an assistant’s longevity with the program. Those that have served their time and paid their dues with unquestionable loyalty to their head coaches have proven their worth as an assistant and will themselves be rewarded one day with the opportunity to lead a program. Other factors that went into the rankings include; overall program success while on staff, total years as an assistant, head coaching experience, recruiting, reputation amongst peers, and future potential. Many staffs, as you will see, have two long tenured assistants that have worked in tandem and are thus grouped together.
Almost all of those listed will one day be head of their own programs and those that are not will only be so by choice. Most importantly is the realization that this list was created not to classify the haves from the have-nots, but to honor those assistants who have done great work throughout their careers and bring something truly special to a staff.

1. Lori Bodnar – Kent State
As one of the most successful mid-major women’s college basketball assistants in the nation, Bodnar has played an integral role in leading the Golden Flashes to 3 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championships, 12 20-win seasons and 4 NCAA Tournament appearances over her 23 years with the program. She has also been vital in recruiting and coaching 14 All-MAC selections and 2 MAC tournament MVPs.

2. Jennifer Roos – Bowling Green
Roos enters her 11th season with the Falcons, where she has helped lead the program to tremendous success including 5 MAC Tournament crowns and 7 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. During the last 8 years, the Falcons have compiled an amazing 213-50 overall record, including 110-18 in MAC regular-season play and 131- 21 in all games vs. league foes during that time.

3. Misti Cussen – Oral Roberts
Since joining the Oral Roberts coaching staff in 1996, Cussin has assisted the Golden Eagles in winning 230 games and five NCAA tournament appearances. As the team’s top assistant, she has also helped the program secure five Summit League tournament titles, three All-American selections, five conference players of the year, five conference newcomers of the year, and 25 all-conference selections.

4. Jodie Kaczor Berry – Gonzaga
Kazcor Berry has helped guide Gonzaga to new heights, as the Bulldogs have made three-straight NCAA tournament appearances since she was promoted as top assistant in 2008. The Bulldogs’ amazing run of success includes winning 36-straight West Coast Conference games, making their first-ever trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2010 and their inaugural appearance in the Elite Eight in 2011.

5. Megan Gebbia – Marist
Gebbia’s resume includes over 18 years of coaching experience as she begins her 8th season on the Marist staff, where she has helped lead the Red Foxes to 8 consecutive MAAC regular season titles and six straight NCAA tournament appearances. She also spent time at Wright State, UMBC and her Alma mater Towson.

6. Jeanine Radice – Delaware
As the longest tenured current assistant coach among Delaware women’s athletics teams, Radice has been a key component behind the Blue Hens run of success, which includes 258 wins, 2 NCAA tournament berths, 5 WNIT appearances and 3 conference titles.

7. Heather Stephens – Liberty
Entering her 9th season on the Lady Flames’ sideline, Stephens has helped build the program into a dominant force in the Big South by assisting them to 192 wins, 6 conference titles, and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2005.

8. Brad Nelson – Northern Iowa
Nelson begins his 12th season at Northern Iowa, where he has played a crucial role in the Panthers’ 2 NCAA Tournament and 3 WNIT postseason runs. Since being named recruiting coordinator in the 2001-02 season, he has helped sign 4 MVC All-Conference players including the 2011 MVC Player of the Year.

9. Charlie Buscaglia – Robert Morris
Enters his 8th season on the Colonials staff and 3rd as associate head coach. Helped RMU to back to back NEC Regular Season and Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008 In 2009-10 team set records for regular season wins (22) and captured its first outright NEC Regular Season. He spent 5 seasons as an assistant at his Alma mater, Manhattan, before joining the RMU staff.

10. Lisa Hayden – Miami (Ohio)
Over her 11 tenure at Miami, Lisa has helped developed 6 Redhawks players presently listed among Miami’s career top 10 in three-point field goals. She has also been instrumental to Miami’s 2 MAC Championships and first NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 7 years.

Federal Way’s Olive and Pulu named All-State

December 1st, 2011 at 4:38 pm by caseyolson
  • Comments

Federal Way High School seniors Uso Olive and Jordan Pulu were named to The News Tribune’s All-State Team.

Olive is a Portland State-commit and might be the strongest player in the state of Washington. The 6-foot, 310-pound Olive can bench press 455 pounds and can toss away opposing offensive lineman like flies.

The senior finished third in the SPSL South in tackles for loss with 12 during the regular season. Olive’s presence in the middle of the Eagle defense helped Federal Way give up just 11.7 points a game, which was far-and-away the best in the SPSL.

Pulu was a first-team, preseason all-state selection and didn’t disappoint. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound middle linebacker was a beast in the middle for the Eagles’ defense and will play next fall at Washington State University. Pulu was named the SPSL South Division’s Linebacker of the Year by the coaches.

Pulu led Federal Way in tackles with 61 in nine SPSL games for an average of 6.8 a game. He had 50 solo tackles and a high game of 10.5. Pulu broke his ankle during the Eagles’ playoff opening win over Snohomish and was held off the field during their state loss to Eastlake.

Washington State hires Mike Leach as football coach

  • Comments

Washington State University has hired Mike Leach to take over the football program from Paul Wulff, who was fired Tuesday.

Leach posted an 84-43 record at Texas Tech, leading the Red Raiders to 10 bowl appearances in 10 seasons. He was fired in 2009 amid allegations he mistreated a player with a concussion.

CBSSports.com first reported that Leach had reached an agreement with Washington State.

Leach was at the top of athletic director Bill Moos’ list of candidates, in part because Moos wants a high-powered offense at WSU. While at Texas Tech, Leach’s Air Raid offense routinely led the nation in passing and set numerous records.

Leach was offensive coordinator at Kentucky and Oklahoma before becoming the Red Raiders head coach in 2000.

In 2009, Texas Tech fired Leach two days after suspending him after it was alleged he mistreated receiver Adam James, who had a concussion. Leach denied the allegations and later sued for wrongful termination.

Wulff was fired after posting a 9-40 record in four years. The Cougars finished 4-8 this season, the best record of his tenure.

Seattle Sounders Lamar Neagle and Patrick Ianni visited Lake Grove Elementary School in Federal Way earlier this week, along with other Sounders FC personnel and the Sounders’ band. The contingent was at Lake Grove because one of their students, Sonny Christensen, won a contest held at Dairy Queen.

Neagle graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and was third on the Sounders this season with seven goals.

Here is a video posted on SoundersFC.com regarding the visit.

Seattle U, Broussard will play in Kent tonight (Nov. 28)

Men’s college basketball is coming to Kent. Tickets are on sale for the Seattle University Redhawks against the Evergreen State College Geoducks game at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28 at the ShoWare Center.

Tickets are $11 for general admission, $17 for reserved club seats and $25 for a selected few end zone courtside seats.
ShoWare Center has hosted several high school basketball games over the last three years, but never a NCAA Division I men’s or women’s basketball contest. That will change when the Seattle takes on Evergreen State from Olympia in a nonconference game.
Seattle finished 11-20 last season and will join the Western Athletic Conference next season under third-year head coach Cameron Dollar. Evergreen State, an NAIA school which plays in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, was 8-20 last season.
Seattle opens its season Saturday, Nov. 12 with a home exhibition game at KeyArena against Pacific Lutheran. The Redhawks are led by senior Aaron Broussard. The Federal Way High School graduate was named as a preseason All-Independent First Team after leading the team last season with 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds a game.
ESPN 710 Seattle will carry the Kent game on radio in the Seattle area with Dave Grosby and Gary Hill, Jr., calling the action.
For tickets, go to showarecenter.com or visit the arena box office at 625 W. James St.

WIAA Board approves 2011-12 state basketball draw criteria

November 22nd, 2011 at 1:55 pm by caseyolson
  • Comments

Here is an item that was posted on the WIAA’s website regarding the draws for the state basketball tournaments:

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s (WIAA) Executive Board approved the following draw criteria for the 2011-2012 State Basketball Tournament for all classifications during a conference call on Nov. 21.

Draw Criteria:
The two teams that qualify from each regional will be drawn into opposite halves of the bracket.

Possible Example:
In most classifications the #1 and #2 teams from each District are playing at the same regional site although they are not playing each other.  If both teams win and advance to the state championships, they would not play each other in the first round.

For Districts with three or more allocations, the additional teams are being sent to one, two or all three other regional sites.  If any of those teams win and advance to the state championships, they could be drawn to play against their District #1 or #2 teams in the first round.

Process for Draws:
The draw for the boys’ tournament will be conducted first and the boys’ championship game will be scheduled first during the school years beginning with an odd number.  The draw for the girls’ tournament will be conducted first and the girls’ championship game will be scheduled first during the school years beginning with an even number.

The 1B, 1A and 3A draws will be conducted first during the school years beginning with an odd number. The 2B, 2A and 4A draws will be conducted first during the school years beginning with an even number.

Bracket Definitions:
The total tournament first round bracket includes games 1 through 4.  The top half bracket includes games 1 and 2, while the bottom half bracket includes games 3 and 4.

All eight teams will be available for the first draw.
2  The home teams for games 1 through 4 will be drawn first.
3  As the first team from a regional is drawn, the second team from that regional will be placed into the opposite half bracket.
4  Visiting teams for games 4 through 1 will then be drawn.

Draw Schedule:
Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the WIAA office
11 AM  1B and 2B Boys and Girls
1 PM  1A and 2A Boys and Girls
3 PM  3A and 4A Boys and Girls
